FRP Cable Tray
When a plant is designed, the focus is often on pipes and pressure vessels. But what happens to the hundreds of power and control cables running across the facility? A failed cable tray system can take down an entire production line. In chemical plants, wastewater facilities, and offshore platforms, standard galvanized steel trays will rust. When they do, sharp rust flakes can cut into cable insulation, leading to short circuits and severe safety hazards.
This is why specifying an FRP cable tray is a critical decision for plant engineers. It is not just about holding cables; it is about protecting them from the environment.
GRP cable tray systems (Glass Reinforced Plastic) are manufactured using continuous glass fibers and thermoset resin. They offer three major advantages over traditional metal trays:
Absolute Corrosion Resistance: They will never rust. In coastal areas, chemical processing, or water treatment plants, they outlast steel trays by decades without requiring repainting.
Electrical Insulation: FRP is non-conductive. If a cable faults or shorts out, the tray will not conduct electricity, protecting workers and adjacent equipment.
Lightweight: An FRP tray weighs about one-third as much as a steel tray of the same size. This makes overhead installation faster and much safer.

Choosing the right physical design is as important as the material itself.
Ladder Type: Best for large power cables. The open rungs allow for maximum ventilation, which helps dissipate heat generated by heavy electrical loads.
Perforated (Trench) Type: Ideal for control and instrumentation cables. The perforations allow for airflow while keeping dust and larger debris away from the cables.
Solid Bottom Type: Used when total cable protection is required. It keeps out moisture, dust, and chemical splashes, but may require additional forced ventilation if the cables run hot.
Even though FRP cable tray is strong, it requires careful engineering regarding support spans.
You must check the load/deflection curve provided by the manufacturer. A tray loaded with heavy power cables will bend if the support brackets are spaced too far apart. Standard spans are typically 1.5 meters to 2 meters, but this depends entirely on your specific cable weight.
Unlike steel, FRP expands and contracts significantly with temperature changes. If you are installing a long, straight run, you must use expansion joints. If the tray is bolted rigidly from end to end, the thermal movement will cause the fiberglass to buckle or crack.
Because GRP cable tray is electrically non-conductive, it does not provide a grounding path. You must run a continuous copper grounding wire along the tray and bond the individual tray sections together using conductive bonding jumpers. This protects the system from electrical faults.

A professional installation relies on the right accessories. Using metal brackets on an FRP tray creates a galvanic corrosion point. Always specify FRP brackets, vertical bends, horizontal tees, and crossover sections. The connections should be made using stainless steel bolts with large washers to distribute the load, and the cut ends of the fiberglass must be sealed with resin to prevent chemical wicking.
At BOANG, we manufacture high-performance FRP cable tray and GRP cable tray systems specifically engineered for rigorous industrial environments. We understand that cable management is a safety-critical system, not just a commodity.
We offer custom widths, heights, and bend radiuses to fit your exact cable routing layout. Our trays are pultruded using premium vinyl ester or isophthalic resins, ensuring high strength and long-term UV and chemical resistance.
